Online Communities Reflection

As an avid user of two online communities (Facebook and Twitter) there are many things I have noticed that I have noticed. In my opinion online communities are a way for people to say what they want to or about other people without ever needing face to face contact. There have been so many times where I see a facebook status update or a new tweet where someone is either complaining, talking negatively about someone or posting complete nonsense. Yes, they have the right to post what they want but some people take it to the next level. 15 new tweets in one minute in my opinion is a little excessive. Through my investigation I have come to the conclusion that people feel more comfortable on Twitter. The tweets are more controversial than what you would find on Facebook. Now don't get me wrong, I don't condemn these social networks. I am on them too much to do so but I do feel that like anything they have negative aspects and positive aspects. One reason I prefer Twitter to Facebook is because there is a limit to how many characters you can post in one tweet. You have to be direct and to the point, but people still manage to disregard this by tweeting multiple times and it only being one sentence or thought. Through twitter I have been able to stay aware of current events and breaking news. I follow CNN, Times Magazine, and NY Times among many others. While the whole problem in Egypt was going on I was able to follow what was happening in real time. I find that it is much more convenient to just pull out your phone and check twitter for a minute or two rather than trying to find a computer or news paper to see whats going on in the world. Trending Topics on Twitter are the things that are most talked about on Twitter. Since it is Valentines Day most of them have to deal with Love or Valentines day itself. All you have to do to be added to the trending topics thread is use a hash tag (#) and then a word. So for example, if you had a bad day and wanted to contribute to a topic you might say #pissedtweet. Through my investigation of this online community I have found a lot, most of which makes me laugh due to the fact that people seem to be totally uninhibited on social networks, Twitter specifically.
